Relationship between decoration and structure in architecture Essay

Relationship between decoration and structure in architecture - Essay Example Decoration refers to the process of making a construction aesthetical while structure refers to the basic features of the structures that enhance the usability and effectiveness of the constructions. The need to balance between the two is vital owing to the role and relevance of the two features in the appropriateness of constructions. Architectures must strive to uphold the two while recognizing the variation in the priorities that they must provide each of the two features as portrayed in the discussion below. Among the fundamental structural features, that architectures must consider in the design of a construction is safety. Structural, material and functional honesty is an architectural value that guides the operations of architectures as they design and carry out various constructions. Honesty of a construction refers to the ability of the construction to bear the load without self-destructing since such would endanger the lives of the users. The value dictates that a structure must display its true purpose and not be merely decoration. This implies that the value recognizes the need for constructions to be aesthetical. However, it gives priority to the functionality of structures. Before incorporating various decorative features into a construction, architectures must ensure that the structures are safe and uphold their actual value. In case a decoration is likely to threaten the safety of a construction, the value dictates that the architectures must overlook such decorative measure s. Honesty as a design value ensures that designers consider and employ appropriate features that will ensure that a structure is safe and stay functional for the time set during its design. When designing a story building for example, the designers must consider such vital features such as the height of the structure, which as well influences the depth of the foundation especially with appropriate consideration to the stability of the location. Police Administration Structures in America Essay

Police Administration Structures in America - Essay Example The principle divergence is in the professional ethos. The early reformers had rallied around the military analogy of conducting a "war on crime." Adoption of the new model of administration structure is viewed as a means of improving the image of police officers and carried with it the more "modest" aim of controlling or preventing rather than defeating crime. The police administration structure is old fashioned based on bureaucratic principles and norms. The pervasive effect of task complexity on structure is highlighted by Newborn (2003). The task is viewed as so complex and variable as to require highly skilled professionals who are able to exercise discretion and interact in a collegial manner and collaborate on solutions. The administration structure that prescribe is spatially differentiated to allow informed neighborhood-level problem identification, and hierarchically undifferentiated to facilitate collegial, participative staff interaction, and has little or no structural specialization (either occupational or functional) in police operations so as to further encourage professional responsibility (Riener, 2000). Span of control, for example, ranges from wide to narrow; number of levels of authority ranges from few to many; degree of centralization in decision-making from low to high; and so on, depending on where the organization is on the organic-mechanistic continuum (Newborn, 2003). These organizational structures are more or less appropriate, depending on the nature of the task and the nature of the community. Mechanistic organizations are better suited to routine tasks performed in stable environments, and that organic organizations are more appropriate when the tasks are less routine and the environments less stable (Riener, 2000). First is the view that the bureaucratic model is presently the dominant form or that police administration organizations tend to be too far out on the bureaucratic end of the continuum.

HS 5600 1 - Assignment Example In addition, the system is non-linear. This provides a contradiction in the proportionality of the output in the context of the input. Other differentiating characteristics include the system being deterministic. This denotes the notion that chaotic behavior is random. Complexities are the factors that make a situation or event inexplicable. In this context, the author describes complexity as the inability to equate the real cause of any chaotic behavior in any situation. In addition, the chaos theory contains complex systems that contain numerous independent elements that continually interact with spontaneous organization and reorganization over time into elaborate structures. Meteorological predictions provide a foundation for determining the consequences as a result of various actions that affect the environment. In this context, predictions in the chaos theory attempt in giving a detailed report into the expected repercussions as a result of chaotic behavior. Also, they help in reducing fatalities and the prevention of chaotic behavior. During the Cold war, deterrence was quite successful despite the fact that there were one or two hitches focused towards preventing the war. Historically, however, deterrence seemed to work much less due to the fact that the cold war, with its bipolar simplicity and strong command on both sides. The threat of mutual, nuclear annihilation represents an extreme case of deterrence . Certainly, deterrence has broken down more often since the end of the Cold War than during it.Based on the case theory we can assume that the international system to be a state of self organizing critically, then we can consider that the Cold war, which was brought about by a breakdown in deterrence, is an instance in which at least parts of the of the system spill into chaos. 5. The article provides an example of a similar formula of deterrence involving nations. Using the formula

Analyzing an article Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Analyzing an article - Assignment Example However, why should not there be a general product for a particular range products. For example, what would happen if Apple’s iPhone were priced similar to Samsung Galaxy? In this case, people would argue that customer’s choice between the Galaxy and the iPhone is based on the brand name. Now suppose we scrape off the brand names and give the two products a similar appearance. Which of the products would sell more and why? This and many other economic and marketing puzzles dominate the article. Issues of brands and prices dominate the technology market. However, the issue still applies even to most basic consumer services. For instance, why are some private doctors or lawyers busier than others are, despite having the same qualification? Consequently, why are some commodities costly and yet they have a better market than cheaper ones. For example, why do people always go for an expensive lawyer whenever they have legal requirements? This and other similar questions are tackled in the article. The author argues that customers are the sole determinants of prices and they control the market. What does being expensive really means. The issue of expensive and cheap commodities characterizes any market. Customers are complaining that a thing is either too expensive or it does not meet their expectations. Surprisingly a car valued at $3000 and a candy valued at $2 might be categorized as expensive products. It beats logic to analyze the price difference between the two products in terms of their price money. Indeed, $3000 is extremely greater than $2. Thus, it might be absurd to categorize both products as expensive products. Consequently, customers of each of the above products have a hypothetical price that they consider as fair or correct. However, how do sellers get access this price without going through the customer? The power to unlock this mystery is the key to successful marketing. Some like when the prices are high while others like it when the prices are at the lower extreme. Choice for either extreme depends on consumer's decisions. Surprisingly customers will always complain that the prices of commodities are extremely high independent of their purchasing power (Bade, and Michael 72). Are consumers always complaining about prices or can we achieve the reverse situation. Indeed, it is possible to manufacture the later scenario in an ideal market. According to the author, successful marketers know how to reverse customer’s view on expensive prices. Analyzing the News In a market system, successful products always have substitute. Availability of substitute is the main factor that distinguishes a competitive or an ideal market from a monopoly. Consumers distinguish different products based on brand names or their market label. Despite the differentiation, some products are more successful than others are. Consequently, customers would buy such products at even high cost defying key economic principles. Price is the key monetary representation of a product’s value. Thus, the price of a product reflects its true value in a particular market. Customers have they own definition of value that depends on the nature of a product and the subsequent economic environment. For example, people would be comfortable buying a bottle of water at $100 in a hot desert. Consequently, the same customers would not be able or willing to buy the same bottle in a place where water

Home bound geriatric patients Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Home bound geriatric patients - Essay Example Homebound geriatric patients often live in senior apartment housing or sometimes, in individual housing. Their homes are sometimes in substandard conditions even if they try very hard to keep their homes clean and livable. Most geriatric patients live alone and depend on visits from family and/or medical professionals for their survival. Their physical limitations also make it difficult for them to go out and buy food for themselves, or if they do have food, they are hampered by their physical or cognitive disabilities to prepare the food. They are vulnerable because of their physical limitations which put them in further danger of injury. Their physical limitations and dependence consequently makes them frustrated and depressed. Their doctors sometimes do not see them for years because they cannot leave their homes and physicians are not anymore in the practice of making house calls. Oftentimes, when medical help is made available to them, their medical condition has already progres sed to unmanageable stages. They are then again consigned to nursing homes or sent back home—back to the very conditions that brought about their worsening medical conditions. I chose this topic because like, the homebound elderly patients, this topic is not given enough attention by the medical community, by our government, and by our society. I chose this topic for its relevance. â€Å"World demographic changes show an increase in the elderly population worldwide† (Zini & Pietrokovsky, 2006). The increase in life span has also resulted to an increase in the number of elderly patients but still not enough medical attention and care given to them. This topic interests me because, unless attention is brought to it, this problem will worsen. The early 1990s alone presented alarming statistics for homebound elderly patients. â€Å"The growth in the number of elderly people in need of long-term care at home has been and is projected to be

Religion in Contemporary Societies Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Religion in Contemporary Societies - Essay Example The use of religion in such situation to further their anti-west sentiments had threatened the whole world. Fundamentalist elements are the product of totalitarian regimes, which nurtured and developed it for their particular interests. The modern Al-Qaeda and ISIS has been the creation of fundamentalist totalitarian authorities with the aid and support from western powers lead by United States of America. Anti-imperialist sentiments are also part of fundamentalist uprising against the imperialist’s design to divide the region and support anarchies of their own choice after the World War I. The anarchies set at that time on the whims of their imperialist masters sowed the seed of Muslim fundamentalism to legitimize their totalitarian rule as Islam allows such authority under Sharia. The focus of the paper will be on fundamentalism of the organization and its relevancy to their motives and political ambitions. In order to have deep understanding of the nature of organization this paper will also study their history and their religious-political development. Furthermore, the role of Western imperialists and their handpicked regional players and the resulting anti-imperialist sentiments culminating in these organizations will be discussed as a subsidiary part of the research topic. The ISIS and Al-Qaeda are the two fundamentalist organization nurturing terrorism. These organizations also have political ambitions inspired by religious notions. The concept of Islamic fundamentalist contradicts with their activities that are mostly driven by economic and sectarian ambitions. The fundamentalism depicted by these two organizations is too complex; hatred and atrocities on other Muslim and non-Muslim people; relationship between state and religion; and rivalry between th e two bands in application of the same ideology. The Salafist-Jihadism is the ideology of ISIS commonly shared with all other fundamentalist organizations like Al-Qaeda and
